Parkwood Baptist Missions

Parkwood is a mission minded church! Our members continue to step “out” of our church walls by volunteering to assist with local, national and international missions and ministries. Parkwood financially supports a variety of missions, ministries and missionaries through cooperative giving via the BGAV, designated contributions and the annual missions budget. Many of the mission efforts Parkwood has been involved with during the last couple of years are listed below in alphabetic order.

Angel Tree
Angel Tree is a ministry that reaches out to the children of inmates and their families with the love of Christ. This unique program provides an opportunity to share Christ’s love by helping to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the families of prisoners. For over 20 years, Parkwood Baptist Church has partnered with Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, Washington, DC, to help brighten the lives of countless children by purchasing, wrapping, and delivering gifts at a Christmas party on behalf of their incarcerated parent—not only delivering a message of love from parent to child, but also the true meaning of Christmas—the good news of Jesus Christ. Asia Mission
Somewhere in Asia there are missionaries with the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention. One of the missionaries grew up here at Parkwood and felt the call early in her life to the mission field. The other, an English teacher officially, leads Bible studies and shares Jesus whenever he has the opportunity. They have given up life as we know it to live in an area that is hostile to missionaries. In fact, for their security, they cannot identify exactly where they are. They refer to their location as the “Steel City.” Together, they are dedicated to sharing the message of the Gospel with all who will listen, even at the risk of their own safety. Parkwood contributes financial support to the their ministry each month. For more information, visit www.imb.org.

Guatemala Mission… John and Aimee Miller
John and Aimee Miller are on mission in Guatemala with Global Outreach International. Their first two years on the field they worked with abused and abandoned children at an orphanage, and it was during this time that they saw the need to minister to those young adults leaving orphanages who are trying to make a quick transition to living independently. In their transition home, called Planting Seeds, they minister to young women by providing them with food and shelter, teaching them how to do the basics of shopping, making and keeping appointments, preparing for interviews, opening bank accounts, etc. They hold them to a standard of conduct and teach them biblical principles. The Millers are also involved in the program Steps of Hope, sponsored by Orphan Resources International, which provides healing retreats and training to children’s home workers so they can work effectively with children who have Random Attachment Disorder. Aimee grew up at Parkwood and sensed a call to missions after a trip to Guatemala. For more information, visit www.fedbyfaith.org.

Native American Missionary…Rose Ignacio
Rose Ignacio is a full-blooded Navajo who serves as a North American Mission Board missionary. She has spent her whole life, living on the Navajo Reservation, in New Mexico. At her home, a trailer located next to Tinian Baptist Church in Cuba, NM, Rose lives modestly. She works seven days a week helping her people with the difficulties of reservation life. Alcoholism, broken homes and unemployment are common, but shared culture, tight family bonds and a pride in their heritage keep the Native Americans on the Reservation. Rose’s area has been called a “war zone”, by some of the pastors, in the New Mexico area. Many people live without electricity or running water. (Tinian itself was without water until the spring of 2011). The children often go to bed hungry and many families can’t afford clothing. And indeed, Rose is like a warrior, holding on tight through the battles so that someday she may win the war. At Tinian Baptist Church, she leads a weekly class for Navajo women and teenage girls, teaching them about Jesus and giving them cultural and language lessons with the goal that one day they will be able to speak and read their own Bible in their native Navajo. She gives them pride in their heritage and a way to connect to God. In addition, Rose spends many days driving miles, from house to house on the reservation, bringing donated clothes and food and serving in other ways. She teaches nursery school, cleans people’s houses, babysits children and runs a food closet. If there is a need, she finds a way to fulfill it. She is literally saving lives on the Reservation and she never, ever loses her faith. A faith she wants to share with her people. Rose believes that by helping others and building relationships, that one day they will be open when she speaks to them about the Lord. And if there is ever anyone who can uplift people and bring them to God, it’s Rose Ignacio. For more information, visit: http://www.onmission.com/Weaving_a_lesson_of_love/.
